Why they matter
The most complete technician alive, and the most stylistically fluent.
Govan can play convincing bebop, country, blues, metal, gypsy jazz and fusion, and the striking thing is that he sounds like a specialist in each of them rather than a virtuoso visiting. That stylistic literacy is rarer than raw speed and much harder to fake.
The technique itself — legato, hybrid picking, whammy control, tapped arpeggios — is essentially unlimited, but it is deployed with a sense of humour and phrasing that keeps his playing musical rather than athletic.
The Aristocrats, his trio with Bryan Beller and Marco Minnemann, is where the writing and the playing meet best.
The sound
Transparent, dynamic overdrive that adapts to whatever genre he is inhabiting
Waves
Clean-to-edge tone with long reverb, relying entirely on touch dynamics for the swells.
Bad Asteroid
Mid-heavy drive with enough clarity for hybrid-picked wide-interval lines.
Wonderful Slippery Thing
A tone that changes character section by section without a single patch change.

Style & technique
How you recognise the playing
Total stylistic fluency
Idiomatically accurate playing across genres, not virtuoso approximations of them.
Hybrid picking
Pick-and-fingers technique enabling wide-interval lines and country-style rolls.
Dynamic touch control
Gain set low enough that pick attack determines saturation.
Melodic humour
Deliberately absurd phrases and quotes used as compositional devices.
