How to Play It

  • Start your strum from the Low E string and avoid any strings marked X.
  • Keep your fingertips close to the fret wire so the G#5 chord rings without buzz.
  • Lay finger 1 across fret 4 and keep your thumb behind the neck for even pressure.
  • Use the edge of your fretting hand and picking-hand palm to mute everything outside the power-chord strings.
  • Mute unused strings with the palm and the underside of the 1st finger.
  • Move the same shape anywhere on the 6th and 5th strings.

Suggested Strumming Pattern

Downstrokes on beats 1, 2, 3, and 4 with light palm muting; keep unused strings silent.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the open A string ring under an E-shape power chord.
  • Letting the barre collapse in the middle strings, causing muted notes or fret buzz.
  • Strumming into muted strings instead of stopping at the first ringing string.

Songs That Use This Chord Type
