The TGP Guitar Shop

String Counter

The cheapest change that alters everything about how a guitar feels.

Gauge is a tension decision before it's a tone decision. Lighter sets bend easily and brighten the attack but lose authority in low tunings; heavier sets tighten the bottom end and thicken the fundamental at the cost of your fretting hand. Scale length matters too — the same set feels stiffer on a 25.5-inch Strat than on a 24.75-inch Les Paul. Pick the set that matches your tuning and your right hand, then leave it alone long enough to actually judge it.
