Gibson's DES Series Is the Most Aggressive Modern Gibson in Years

Gibson spends most of its year defending history. Reissues, historic spec sheets, faithful burst recreations, arguments about the exact shade of a 1959 top. It is a profitable habit and a defensible one, but it leaves a whole category of guitarist shopping elsewhere.

The DES Series is aimed at that guitarist.

Launched this week and sold exclusively through Gibson.com and the Gibson Garage stores, it is a limited run covering six shapes — Les Paul, SG, ES, Explorer, Flying V and Victory — developed by Master Luthier Jim DeCola and the Nashville craftories alongside Gibson board member and artist ambassador Cesar Gueikian. The name comes from a phrase Gueikian has pushed inside the company for years: "Do Epic Sh#t."

The spec sheet is the story

Read the feature list and it stops looking like a finish option and starts looking like a statement of intent.

Every DES model runs a compound-radius ebony fretboard, flattening from 10 inches at the nut to 16 inches at the top of the neck. That is a shred-guitar specification. It exists so chords feel comfortable in the first position and bends stop choking out at the twelfth fret. Gibson has used compound radii before, but not as a series-wide default.

The necks follow the same logic. The Les Paul, SG, Explorer, Flying V and Victory all use a SlimTaper mahogany profile, and the Les Paul adds Gibson's Modern Contoured Heel for upper-fret access. Only the semi-hollow ES holds onto a Rounded C. The SG and Victory go further and carry 24 frets rather than the usual 22.

Then there are the pickups.

ELEV8 goes into a guitar

Gibson introduced the ELEV8 humbuckers last week as its first Pickup Shop design built around Alnico 8 magnets — a stronger magnet grade than the Alnico 2 and 5 that have carried the company since 1955, chosen for tighter lows and more focus under high gain.

The DES Series is where that pickup gets a guitar built around it. The SG and Victory pair a standard ELEV8 with the overwound ELEV8 Plus at the bridge; the rest run the standard voicing. All of them are left uncovered with zebra coils, which is as clear a signal as Gibson can send about who this line is for.

Wiring varies more than you would expect across a six-model run. The Les Paul gets push/pull coil-tap plus True Bypass and Phase switching. The ES and SG get coil-tap. The Victory adds inner/outer coil selection. The Explorer keeps it simple with master volume, master tone and a three-way.

Ghost Burst

The finish is what you will actually notice first, and it is the part that will split the room.

Ghost Burst is a gloss nitrocellulose finish over AAA figured maple, dark and high-contrast rather than the warm honey-to-amber gradient Gibson usually sells. Paired with black nickel hardware, multi-ply binding, mother-of-pearl Super Split Block inlays and uncovered zebra pickups, it lands much closer to an '80s high-end production guitar than to anything in the Original Collection.

The Explorer and Flying V lean into that explicitly — both are built on '80s-style bodies with multi-ply-bound AAA figured maple caps rather than the plain mahogany slabs the shapes normally get.

The money

Gibson lists the SG, Explorer, Flying V and Victory DES at $3,499, the Les Paul DES at $3,999 and the semi-hollow ES DES at $4,299. Each ships in a Gibson hardshell case, and a portion of every purchase goes to Gibson Gives, the company's 501(c)(3) foundation.

That is USA Gibson pricing with a limited-run premium on top, sitting above standard Original and Modern Collection models and below the Custom Shop. Whether it reads as fair depends entirely on how you value the combination — figured maple, ebony, compound radius, locking tuners and new pickups is a genuinely loaded spec sheet, but it is also the kind of spec sheet several boutique and import brands will sell you for less.

What they will not sell you is a Gibson-shaped Gibson. That has always been the premium, and Gibson knows it.

Who it is actually for

• You want a Gibson but you play modern rock, prog or metal and always end up modifying one.
• You want 24 frets and a flat upper register on an SG or a Victory.
• You like the shape and the scale length but not the vintage voicing.
• You are a collector and limited-run Gibsons interest you regardless of spec.

If you are chasing a PAF-voiced, volume-cleanup, classic-rock Les Paul, this is not that guitar and is not pretending to be. The Alnico 8 pickups alone push it in a different direction.

The Gibson Band and "Sanctuary"

The launch is tied to the return of the Gibson Band with a benefit single, "Sanctuary," written by Gueikian and featuring Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess on orchestration and keys, Mateus Asato on lead guitar and guest vocals from Jagger Davies, produced by Gueikian and Emery Dobyns.

Proceeds go to the Save The Music Foundation via Gibson Gives, and a one-off "Sanctuary" Soundwaves guitar — artwork built from the song's actual waveform, made with Tim Wakefield of the Soundwaves Art Foundation — is being auctioned through RallyUp to raise more.

Before you spend four thousand dollars

The uncomfortable part of a launch like this is that most of what people are chasing when they buy a new guitar is a sound, and a guitar is only one link in the chain that makes it.

A hotter Alnico 8 bridge pickup will tighten your low end. It will not fix an amp with the gain past three o'clock, a scooped mid control or strings that went dead in July. Those are free to fix; this guitar is not.

The DES Series is sold only through Gibson.com and Gibson Garage locations, so there is no dealer network to shop around. Limited runs do reach the used market quickly, though, and Reverb is where the first flips usually appear. For standard Gibson models at lower prices, Amazon is worth a look.
